Weekend Briefing

From Reuters Daily Briefing

By Robert MacMillan, Reuters.com Weekend Editor

Thank you for reading the Weekend Briefing. I recommend our special report on Iran’s hunt for protesters at home and abroad. Another good one: Erik Prince’s private forces suffered a deadly battlefield defeat in the Democratic Republic of Congo. And Democrats are trying a midterms strategy that looks like overreach – only at first glance.

Republican opposition widens to livestreamed execution

Change the channel: JD Vance made plenty of distance between himself and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s plan to air Nidal Hasan’s execution live online. Donald Trump said he hasn’t decided whether to allow it. The FCC and the White House referred reporters to the Pentagon. Catholic and evangelical Christian leaders, the UN and international observers panned the idea.
Focus on diesel: President Trump said Russia agreed to supply diesel to global markets to lower fuel prices. The administration temporarily lifted US sanctions on Russian fuel that were designed to deprive Moscow of its revenue for the Ukraine war. Trump needs lower diesel prices to help Republicans in the November elections, but analysts say the strategy might not work.

India arrests protest leaders

Latest: Police detained scores of “Cockroach” protesters and the movement’s leaders and locked down New Delhi. The demonstrators are demanding that the country’s election chief quit, accusing him of manipulation of voter lists.
Making the most of it: Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and allied lawmakers managed to get themselves arrested three times in two days after adding their voices to the protests.

Student protester injuries bring scrutiny of French police

Shot in the mouth: Reuters has documented 28 cases of injuries suffered because of police force during student demonstrations against dilapidated schools. They involve rubber bullets, stun grenades, tear gas, batons and charges on horseback.
A look next door: Germany's chancellor warned that extremism was entering Germany's parliamentary system after at least four lawmakers in the state of Saxony-Anhalt appeared to defy party orders not to work with the far-right AfD.

Introducing the former hurricane Isaias

Southern hospitality: Isaias weakened to a post-tropical cyclone after hitting the Florida panhandle and moving into Alabama. President Trump canceled his plan to attend the Bulldogs-Crimson Tide football game as the National Hurricane Center warned of flooding. Hurricane Simon is gaining strength as it moves toward Mexico’s Pacific coast.
Sicily: A tornado swept through Marsala and neighboring towns. Experts said this was a nearly unprecedented event on the island.

El Niño threatens floods for Gaza shelters

UN warning: Almost all Gaza’s population will need tents or help with shelter before winter rains spurred by the weather phenomenon arrive, the UN’s migration agency said.
West Bank: A Palestinian was killed during an Israeli settler attack while harvesting olives. Settlers planted dozens of Israeli flags outside a Palestinian café in what its owner described as intimidation.

Build your own dam

Hungary: Reporters Marton Monus and Krisztina Than visited a bone-dry valley where forest workers and volunteers are building their own dams to catch water and prepare the landscape for an even hotter and drier future.
Slovenia: The Triglav glacier was a magnet for summer skiers and is a symbol of the nation’s alpine heritage. Researchers say it could disappear within days. In Tuvalu, Pacific leaders watched an effort to reclaim land and prevent the country’s main island from being submerged.

It’s not just coffee

It’s transactional: Starbucks declined to comment on a Financial Times report that the coffee chain was considering a takeover of Chipotle Mexican Grill. Starbucks’ chief executive, who was hired to turn the company around, used to run Chipotle.
Cooks in the kitchen: PepsiCo was under pressure from a major investor to deliver on growth and profit-margin targets before it reported quarterly results this past Thursday. It didn’t deliver.

Before I forget…

Dozens of protesters in Tokyo decried crimes by US service members after a Marine was accused of killing a woman in Okinawa.
European intelligence services are trying to find out what intelligence Germany’s former spy chief might have compromised after he was arrested on suspicion of espionage and treason.
An Anthropic AI model gave Philadelphia police a false homicide tip despite being told not to do things like that. Side note: Do rogue agents remind anybody of Johnny the air-traffic controller in the "Airplane!" movies?
Trump is not taking the Nobel Peace Prize decision well.
Marine archaeologists set sail for a tiny island in the Pacific to learn whether a submerged object in a lagoon could be the wreckage of Amelia Earhart’s airplane.
Are you tired of that awful glare you get from the headlights on modern cars? (The answer is yes.) The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it will rewrite vehicle-lighting standards to address this problem.
